The Blue Jackal
A jackal falls into a vat of blue dye and pretends to be a divine creature — until his own voice gives him away.
The Story
In a forest near a small village, a jackal named Chandarava was chased by a pack of dogs one evening. Terrified and desperate, he ran into a washerman's yard and fell headfirst into a large vat of indigo dye. When he climbed out, his fur was a brilliant, unearthly blue from head to tail.
The next morning, the forest animals saw this strange blue creature and were terrified. No one had ever seen such a being. Chandarava seized his chance. "I am Kakudruma," he announced grandly, "sent by the gods to rule over you." The lions, tigers, elephants, and foxes all bowed before him, bringing him the finest food and treating him as their divine king. Chandarava lived in luxury, secretly banishing all the other jackals from the forest so no one would recognise him.
But one moonlit night, a pack of jackals in the distance began to howl. The sound stirred something deep in Chandarava's bones — something he could not control. He threw back his head and howled in reply. In that instant, every animal recognised the unmistakable cry of a common jackal. The illusion shattered, and the furious animals chased the fraud out of the forest forever. No amount of colour can change who you truly are.
